An observation of patterns in your own trade data, not financial advice. Two and a half months covering one run-up and one pullback is a short sample, so some patterns may reflect the market more than your decisions.
The short version
Your entries and coin selection are good, and your losses per position are well capped. The weak point is exits: open profit isn't protected, so most of the gains came back. Closed trades are net negative; the profit sits in two open positions (NEAR, ZEC).
What's going well
- Good picks and entries. Weighted by dollar amount, prices were +5.4% higher 3 days after your buys and +10% higher 7 days after. Your two biggest early bets, NEAR (+86%) and ZEC (+43%), made most of the profit.
- Far ahead of simply holding BTC. +$191K, against about +$38K if every deposit had bought BTC on the day it arrived.
- Losses per position are capped. No coin was ever worse than −17.8% of what went into it; most bottomed out above −7%. The biggest realized loss (ONDO, −$16.6K) was 0.9% of capital.
- Adding to winners, not losers. 78% of the money added to existing positions went in above your average cost.
- Low costs. Fees are about 0.08% of volume; roughly half fills as maker.
What's hurting
- Open profit isn't protected. Total profit peaked at +$681K on 27 Sep and is +$191K now: 72% given back. Only about $31K has ever been locked in by selling.
- Winners turn into losers. Of 9 coins fully sold, 6 closed at a loss, and all 6 had been in profit first: PHA (peak +$22.7K → −$16.0K), STRK (+$20.1K → −$0.5K), SOL (+$20.1K → −$2.1K), 0G (+$14.4K → −$1.6K), ONDO (+$7.3K → −$16.6K), XPL (+$3.6K → −$9.5K).
- Exits happen after drops. About 60% of selling (by $) came after a 5%+ fall over the previous 3 days; prices then rose about +4% within a week.
- No cash at the top. Under 10% cash from 9 Sep to 17 Oct, which covers the whole peak. Cash was rebuilt to 25% by selling after the decline.
- Some chasing. About 31% of buying (by $) came after a 10%+ run-up over 3 days.
- Many positions at once. Up to 18 coins at a time, many of them $35K–$200K, which makes it hard to manage each exit.
Risk : reward
Your sense that losses are capped is right. Measured from entry, the worst point of any coin was −17.8%, and the worst points of all coins together add up to −$122K. The upside was much bigger: the best points add up to +$903K, about 7× the risk taken.
In practice the ratio collapses, because the cap applies only below your entry price, not to open profit. On the 9 coins you've closed: 3 wins averaging +$9.3K (+9.3%), 6 losses averaging −$7.7K (−9.6%). That's about 1.2 : 1 at a 33% win rate, net −$18.3K. From each coin's best point to now, $711K has been given back, nearly 6× the combined worst-case drawdown.
Put differently: you protect your capital well, but once a position is in profit, the profit itself isn't treated as something to protect.
Questions to work on
- When do you sell? Can that be decided at the time you buy, both for taking profit and for cutting?
- Would selling in pieces while prices are strong fit your style, instead of all at once after a drop?
- What would stop a position that's well in profit from closing at a loss?
- How much cash should always stay in reserve?
- How many positions can you actually watch at once?
